Romance is in the air—can you feel it? Many of us are searching for the perfect romantic gift. It’s a time for simple gestures that express love and devotion. Will your sweetie enjoy a decadent box of chocolates or a relaxing dinner for two? While February is the most popular month for romantic gifts, it’s also a great idea to show your devotion to loved ones throughout the year.

It may seem that many of us save up our romance for February. There are commercials everywhere to remind us to buy cards, chocolates, flowers, and all kinds of special gifts. But why not show loved ones your devotion year-round? There are many ways to add some romance and fun to your life regardless of what month the calendar says it is.

You can start by taking some time to think about how your loved one enjoys being pampered. By showing a true interest in your honey’s hobbies and interests, you’ll show how much you care about the person. You may be surprised by the difference that some simple romantic gestures can make.

Experts agree that finding time for romance outside of February can be very helpful in smoothing out a rocky relationship and making a strong one even better. The idea is to express your love and commitment. Don’t think of it as having to buy presents all year, but rather how romantic gestures can be meaningful to explore.

Here are some ideas to help you get started for Valentine’s Day. Consider them for the remaining months of the year as well.

Chocolate: Can you really ever have too much chocolate? Modern historians estimate that chocolate has been around for about 2,000 years, but its roots stretch back even further. It’s usually the candy or dessert that we find the hardest to pass up. Dark chocolate, in particular, boasts a host of health benefits. Surprise your sweetie this Valentine’s Day—and throughout the year—with a mix of his or her favorite chocolates.

Lingerie: Giving lingerie as a gift can be a very thoughtful gesture. It shows that you want your partner to look and feel beautiful all at the same time. It’s best to take the time to find something that isn’t just sexy, but truly flatters the one you love. A salesperson at your sweetie’s favorite store can be a great source to help you make the right decision on a new robe or lacy negligee. You can choose a favorite designer, brand, or color to help make the selection. The gift of lingerie is something to be enjoyed all year and can make someone feel very special.

Nice dinner out: Taking your sweetheart out for dinner can be a very special gift. If it’s hard to buy material items for him/her, then time spent together enjoying wonderful food is a great choice. When you go out you can make it a fun game by trying a different type of cuisine each month: Italian, Indian, Japanese, American, etc.

Jewelry: Can this ever be the wrong choice? Women and men love jewelry, and by speaking with your local jeweler you can find the perfect item that is a token of your affection. Want to go all out? Have a custom piece specifically designed for your sweetheart.

Romantic getaway: Going on a romantic getaway with your loved one can be a truly uplifting experience. Many find that their relationship is deepened simply by a change of scenery. It may be something as simple as a night staying in your own town at a boutique hotel you’ve read so much about. Or you can choose to get out of town to a nearby hotel. Lots of hotels boast great specials that might include dinner, massages or other spa services, and even entertainment. You can seek out the environment that appeals to you the most: a rocking casino atmosphere or a small hotel that’s off the beaten path, for example.

Another great travel gift possibility is a trip to someplace warm—perhaps a cruise? Cruising is an incredibly carefree way to relax and fall in love once again. When you cruise, everything is taken care of for you. Once you’ve unpacked, all you need to do is let the crew spoil you as you sail from one exotic port of call to another.

A cruise vacation allows the two of you to totally focus on one another. The cabin steward cleans your cabin, and there is 24-hour room service. There is a variety of restaurants to choose from, from casual to elegant. And let’s not forget the entertainment and casino!

There are several different cruise lines to choose from. Maybe you and your sweetie love to party until the wee hours of the night. Or maybe your idea of a romantic vacation is lying in the sun with the love of your life while someone brings you both pina coladas. Perhaps it’s something in between. Contact your local travel agent and he or she will be able to match you up with the perfect ship and itinerary.

Another possibility would be a trip to an all-inclusive resort. Resorts offer the benefit of knowing in advance what the financial outcome will be before you get on the plane. Again, your local travel agent can guide you to the best option.

You might be surprised to think about chocolates or lingerie outside of February. These do make wonderful Valentine’s Day gifts. However, wouldn’t it be fun to surprise your loved one with a special treat at different times of the year? Take a moment now to pencil in some romantic gifts and gestures into your calendar. You may find that any day of the year can feel as special as Valentine’s Day.
